"The first rule in decision-making is that one does not make a decision unless there is disagreement. ... The only way to break out of the prison of special pleading and preconceived notions is to make sure of argued, documented, thought-through disagreements.
Second, disagreement alone can provide alternatives to a decision. And a decision without an alternative is a desperate gambler's throw, no matter how carefully thought through it might be."

Peter Drucker in "The Effective Executive", p 148ff.

From Strengthsfinder 2.0, p. 165:
"The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. ... This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, "What if this happened?". .. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path - your strategy."

I believe that people strong in Strategic like discussions and disagreement because it helps them "sorting through the clutter", even more so if Strategic goes together with Ideation (my case!). But I have also experienced that not everybody understands and appreciates this. Sometimes, employees seek a leader that "takes a stance and asks them to move in a certain direction " (from the definition of Command). Brainstorming and disagreement may delight the Strategic folks, but may frustrate people with Achiever, Discipline, Activator and maybe also Focus to some extent.

"As long as we can handle the events on the operating level by adaptation rather than by thinking, by "feel" rather than by knowledge and analysis, operating people - in government, in the military or in business - will be untrained, untried and untested when, as top managers, they are first confronted with strategic decisions."

Peter Drucker in "The Effective Executive", p. 164

People with Strategic can get frustrated in an environment thriving too much on adaptation and "fire fighting", especially if they also have Intellection, Analytical, Discipline or Focus.

"The greatest impact of the computer lies in its limitations, which will force us increasingly to make decisions, and above all, force middle managers to change from operators into executives and decision-makers."

Peter Drucker in "The Effective Executive", p. 164

A word of caution of Strategic (and Deliberative) going too far (and robbing your sleep at night):

"It is fruitless and a waste of time to worry about what is acceptable and what one had better not say so as to evoke resistance. The things one worries about never happen. And objections and difficulties no one thought about suddenly turn out to be insurmountable obstacles."

Peter Drucker in "The Effective Executive", p. 136

A word of caution to people with strong but insufficiently developed Strategic:

"Some of the smartest people that I've hired over the years - many of them from consulting - had real difficulty with edge, especially when they were put into operations. In every situation, they always saw too many options, which inhibited them from taking action. That indecisiveness kept their organizations in limbo. In the end, for several of them, that was a fatal flaw."

Jack Welch in "Winning", p. 86
