"Another dimension of the traditional Japanese spirit is their willingness to bear the unbearable, or come very close to it, a trait that has been commonplace in Japan for centuries and institutionalized under the broad term of gamanzuyoi, which includes the notions of "strong forebearance", "strong perseverance", "strong patience" and dedication to completing tasks.
All of Japan's most famous arts, crafts and aesthetic practices as well as its ideographic system of writing, required enormeous amounts of gamanzuyoi. The accomplishments of Japan's samurai warriors and of its post-Shogunate soldiers were founded in gamanzuyoi."

Boyé Lafayette de Mente in "The Japanese Samurai Code - Classic Strategies for Success", p. 11 f.
